Lockheed P-3K/K2 Orion
Hood Aerodrome, Masterton
The Lockheed P-3K/K2 Orion served as the Royal New Zealand Air Force's primary maritime patrol aircraft for over five decades, from 1966 until its retirement in 2023. The RNZAF originally acquired five P-3B Orions in the mid-1960s, which were later upgraded to P-3K standard in the 1980s with improved avionics and systems. A subsequent major upgrade program in the 2010s saw the remaining fleet of six aircraft (having acquired additional airframes over the years) converted to P-3K2 standard with glass cockpit displays, new mission systems, and improved sensors. Operated by No. 5 Squadron based at RNZAF Base Ohakea, the Orion fleet was the backbone of New Zealand's maritime surveillance capability, tasked with patrolling vast areas of the South Pacific and Southern Ocean, including New Zealand's enormous exclusive economic zone—one of the world's fourth-largest at over 4 million square kilometers.

The P-3K2 Orion's roles for the RNZAF extended far beyond traditional anti-submarine warfare. While retaining ASW capability, the aircraft primarily conducted maritime patrol and surveillance operations, fisheries protection, search and rescue coordination, and support for scientific research in Antarctic waters. The Orions were regularly deployed on Operation Enduring Freedom and other international commitments, conducting surveillance operations in support of coalition efforts. The aircraft also played vital humanitarian roles, including assisting with disaster relief operations throughout the Pacific islands, conducting search and rescue missions, and supporting New Zealand's Antarctic research program with supply flights and reconnaissance. After more than 50 years of distinguished service, the P-3K2 was retired in 2023 and replaced by the Boeing P-8A Poseidon, marking the end of an era. The Orion's legacy in RNZAF service represents an extraordinary record of operational achievement across multiple generations of New Zealand personnel.
